Following the loss of 176 and crew in 1977, the CNO assigned KC-130 transport Hercs to the TACAMO squadrons to permit pilot and flight deck crew proficiency training in similar aircraft, enable self lift for logistics support, and to lessen the landings placed on the heavier EC-130s.

- Mike Davidson Collection. NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii was the first home for the Fleet E-6 Mercury. Skipper Davidson flew in with the first one in 1989. VQ-3 was then one of the squadrons assigned to Commander Patrol Wing TWO with several VP (P-3 antisubmarine patrol) squadrons.
